How to Get a Job as a Truck Driver in Canada
Here are the steps required to get a job as a truck driver in Canada.
- Obtain a passenger vehicle Class 5 driver’s licence.
You can obtain a vehicle driver’s license if you have at least two years of non-learning driving experience as evidenced by a driver’s license from another location that has a reciprocal agreement with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). Otherwise, you will need to take a knowledge and road test, which demands that you be a learner for at least 12 months. Taking an ICBC-approved driver training course with no at-fault crashes can grant you six months off the 12-month requirement.
- Get training to become a truck driver.
Many technical and trade schools offer training to give you the knowledge and skills to become a truck driver. While such programs usually incur a cost, government-sponsored professional truck driver programs are also available that are tuition-free. Through in-class and on-road training, you learn how to handle air brakes, safety codes, defensive driving, and driving under extreme weather, among other skills. Courses can take up to eight weeks or longer to complete.
You will need to get a learner’s licence before beginning any on-road training. This requires that you pass knowledge and road signs tests, and not suffer from certain medical conditions such as specific types of epilepsy, sleep disorders, or heart conditions. All licensing tests incur a fee.
- Get your full license.
Trucking companies in BC demand that you have a full-privilege commercial licence before you even apply with them. This requires that you successfully pass a commercial road test and receive a Driver Medical Exam form. Your doctor will fill out this form after giving you a driver’s medical examination, which entails a fee.
- Get a job.
After you obtain your full commercial driver’s licence, you can now apply for driver jobs. The large and growing number of openings will ease your job search. However, while some employers will hire new drivers, others demand some experience.
